Why Monday, April 21st?

Monday, April 21 is about three weeks before the Governor is scheduled to submit his May Revise for consideration by the Legislature.

The Governor, the Legislature, government, business, labor and community leaders need to know that education is a priority and that we are willing to organize, mobilize and turnout en masse across the state.

Hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating, marching, protesting, walking out on the same day is both energizing and symbolic and helps solidfy a message and generate a shared experience.

Ultimately, 4-21-08 should be considered the beginning of a multi-year effort to fundamentally and positively transform California, its institutions and processes.

Why Should You and Others Organize?

The 2008-2008 proposed budget cuts education to the tune of $5.4 billion dollars. More specifically,

  • K-12 schools are going to be cut $4.3 billion dollars
  • California Community Colleges are going to be cut $403.5 million dollars
  • California State University is going to be cut $312.9 million dollars
  • University of California is going to be cut $331.9 million dollars

Students, teachers, educators, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, and our entire state will be negatively affected because:

  • K-12 students will have less teachers, larger classroom sizes, less arts, music and sports programs
  • Over 50,000 potential community college students will be unable to afford attending college
  • Over 10,000 potential CSU students will be denied admission because the universities have reached their capacity
Without a highly educated, highly skilled workforce, our state's economy will weaken and we will all fall behind in an increasingly interconnected, globally competitive world.
